Popular Software Tool Upgraded To Include Bluetooth Administration

July 16, 2013 – Administrators of mobile computers and other business-critical mobile devices soon will be able to configure and manage Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® radios from a single interface, thanks to a new version of the popular Summit Client Utility (SCU), released today by global technology leader Laird.

Previous versions of SCU have been used to configure and manage the Summit-branded Wi-Fi radio on over a million business-critical devices used in the world’s most challenging environments. SCU version 4, which is available only with Summit 40 Series radio modules, configures and manages both the Wi-Fi (dual-band 802.11n) and Bluetooth (2.1) components of the module.

“Device administrators around the world depend on SCU for straight forward, complete Wi-Fi administration on an easy-to-use interface,” said Laird Product Manager Chris Downey. “With the new version of SCU, those administrators get an updated, more intuitive interface not just for Wi-Fi but for Bluetooth device connections, too.”

Like the classic version, the new SCU version offers two levels of functionality: user and administrator. When using SCU version 4 on a device with a 40 series radio inside, a user can view the status of both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections on one screen. If a connection issue arises, a user can gather diagnostic information and run diagnostic tests.  In addition to user functions, a device administrator can create and manage Wi-Fi radio and Bluetooth device profiles.

The new version of SCU also has a very different look from its predecessor. Five layout tabs have been streamlined to three – Status, Configuration and Diagnostics – with Bluetooth information and functions integrated on each tab.

“Users and administrators no longer have to use two tools with very different interfaces to manage Wi-Fi and Bluetooth,” added Downey. “The integrated and intuitive interface of SCU version 4 saves users and administrators time, and makes them more productive.”

SCU version 4 operates on Windows Embedded Compact (formerly Windows CE) and Windows Embedded Handheld (formerly Windows Mobile), with support for Android planned.

Previous versions of SCU remain available for versions of Summit radio modules other than the 40 Series.
